About the GRE Subject Test

The Subject Tests gauge undergraduate achievement in six specific fields of study and is often required for admission into a master’s degree program. GRE subject test scores are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records, letters of recommendation and other qualifications for graduate study.

The scores provide common measures for comparing the qualifications of applicants and aid in the evaluation of grades and recommendations. The Biology and Psychology tests yield subscores that can indicate the strengths and weaknesses of an individual student’s preparation. The subscores can also be used for guidance and placement purposes. The test is of paper pencil format.

Who takes GRE Subject Tests and who accepts them?

Prospective graduate school applicants take the Subject Tests. GRE Subject Test scores are accepted by thousands of graduate schools. Many individual departments or divisions of Graduate schools accept the GRE Subject test scores as it indicates the knowledge and skill level in a specific area. It’s best to contact the admissions office or department you are interested in and see exactly what they are looking for.

How much do the tests cost?

The fee is $150. The late registration fee (online registration only) is $25.

How are the tests scored?

Each GRE Subject Test yields a total score on a 200–990 score scale, in 10-point increments. Subscores are reported for the Biology and Psychology Tests on a scale of 20–99, in one-point increments.

In which format are the GRE Subject Tests delivered?

The GRE subject tests are paper-based. These tests take place thrice a year in April, September, and October.

What is the total duration of the GRE General Test?

The GRE is roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes long. The AWA section is for 1 hour; the GRE verbal sections are for 30 minutes each and the math sections are 35 minutes each. The GRE experimental section can be for 30 or 35 minutes. Along with the breaks in between, the test is for nearly 3 hours and 45 minutes.

How many tasks are in GRE’s Analytical Writing?

There are two tasks on the GRE’s AWA section – 1 Issue essay and 1 Argument essay. Both these essays should be completed in 30 minutes each.

Is there any break in between the GRE test?

There are breaks in between the different sections on the GRE test. There is an optional 10-minute break after the third section and a 1-minute break after the remaining sections. These break timings cannot be extended.

Is the structure for Computer-Delivered GRE and Paper-Delivered GRE different?

Both the paper-based and computer-delivered GRE are similar in content, structure, and scoring. The paper-based test has more questions and more time allocated for the GRE verbal and GRE quants sections.
