All About Advanced Placements

Advanced Placements® or AP® tests are college-level exams on specific subjects that are administered in May and can be taken by students while still in secondary school.

AP tests are only offered during a two-week period in May, so plan ahead to ace the AP exams.

Why Take the AP?

Through AP courses you will learn to think critically, construct solid arguments, and see many sides of an issue—skills that prepare you for successful college life.

Your AP test scores demonstrate your commitment and motivation to the college admissions officers since you have sought the most rigorous curriculum available right in high school.

Research indicates that students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success in college and are more likely to earn a college degree than non-AP students.

What Specifically do the APs Test?

A lot! Similar to the SAT Subject Tests, AP tests cover a range of subjects from Biology to European History to Music Theory. There are currently over 38 AP test options. Want to know the full list? We’re glad you asked. See the full list of AP subjects.

How Does a Good AP Score Help You?

Good AP scores can earn you college credit. Just remember that every school is different. Some won’t accept credit unless you score a 4 or above. Be sure to check with your top schools to understand how they handle AP scores.

A high AP score, besides giving you a chance to lower your overall tuition fee & save time, improves your acceptance chances in the school of your choice and even opens you up to consideration for scholarships.

Earning college credits also means that you can open up your schedule to diverse majors and subjects to further enhance your academic profile and thereby your career profile.
