At-Home Advanced Placement (AP) Online Exams Due to the Coronavirus

Many of you would have registered for the AP May 2020 exam and would also be preparing for the test. With the current COVID -19 circumstances, the College Board has extended support to students who are still eager to take the AP exam and have a chance to earn credits and placements. Only for this year, those who have registered for the May test have the option to take the test at home.

Let’s have a look at the AP home testing features, exam structure, schedule, and scoring –

AP Exam Structure and Format:

  • AP exams for this year will have only the free response questions; no multiple choice questions will appear on the test.
  • Most of the AP subjects will have one or two free response questions in which each question will be timed separately.
  • Students will have to write and submit their responses for each question in the given time.
  • For most of the exams, the duration is 45 minutes and an additional 5 minutes will be given to upload the responses.
  • The topics and the skills tested in the AP test remain the same.

AP Exam features:

  • AP Home testing will be an open book test with one or two free response questions.
  • You can take the exam on any device – computer, tablet or a Smartphone.
  • You can either type and upload your responses or you can write and submit a photo through your mobile phone.
  • Questions are specifically designed for AP home testing, so points will not be earned for content taken from books or online resources.
  • The College Board will be using a range of digital security tools and techniques, including plagiarism detection software and post-administration analytics, to protect the integrity of the exam.

AP as an open book test:

Though AP is an open book test, you have to prepare for the AP exam. You can pick up facts, formulae or information from the textbooks or online resources which will be only the first step; you should know how to apply the facts in the question to complete the task. If you take more time searching for the information then you may not have time to write the response. So, an open book test may be useful for referring to the facts but still you have to prepare to use the facts effectively in the questions.

AP Exam Schedule in India:

  • AP exams are conducted from May 11 through May 22.
  • For security reasons, each subject’s exam will be taken on the same day at the same time, worldwide.
  • Make-up test dates will be available for each subject from June 1 through June 5.

AP Scoring

  • As usual, AP exams will be scored by AP expert college faculties.
  • The score will be on the scale of 1 to 5.
  • The College Board expects the score release would be by July.

The College Board had committed to provide more information on how to access the testing system and also a video demonstration in late April 2020 so that students can practice and get familiarized with the online testing.

The College Board is confident that a vast majority of higher education institutions will offer credits based on AP scores like in the past.

If you have registered for the May 2020 AP exam, go ahead and do the AP home testing.
