Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

The Advanced Placement Program created by the College Board in USA and Canada offers college-level curriculum and examinations to high school students. The students who get high scores in the Advanced Placement examinations usually receive grant placement and course credits by colleges & universities in the United States. More and more students in India are pursuing further studies in colleges and universities in other nations via Advanced Placement, with many applying to institutions in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Benefits of Taking AP

There are numerous advantages to taking AP Courses and Exams as an Indian student.

  • Taking AP courses allows students to stand out in the college applications process by demonstrating to admissions officers that they have pursued the most difficult curriculum accessible to them. Students who take AP courses and examinations are seen favorably by universities all over the world since their accomplishment in AP reflects a student’s dedication and potential to thrive in university-level academics.
  • AP Exams allow students to earn college credit or advanced placement before they even begin college, allowing them to graduate early (students can sometimes save up to a year at college), save tuition, pursue a double major, move into upper-level courses sooner, gain time to travel abroad or complete an internship. On the basis of successful AP Exam scores, more than 90% of universities in the United States give credit, advanced placement, or both. Furthermore, all top universities in Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as several European universities, accept AP for admission, credit, or placement. Credit policies vary by college, so students should familiarise themselves with the policies of the colleges in which they are interested.
  • The AP Scholar Awards are given to high school students who have exhibited extraordinary college-level success in AP courses and tests (non-monetary). Indian students can also achieve the Advanced Placement International Diploma (APID) by scoring a 3 or above on 5 or more AP Exams. AP Exam success can also help students receive academic scholarships and awards from colleges and universities.
  • AP can help a student exhibit his or her competency in a certain field of study, as well as provide students with the chance to study a subject that they are interested in but are unable to pursue at their current school. Some students take AP Exams to fulfil their university’s General Education requirements.
  • AP courses and exams assist students in developing critical thinking, reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills that are required for success in college and beyond. This is especially essential in the Indian context because the teaching style in schools that follow the Indian curriculum can sometimes differ significantly from what has been practiced abroad.
  • The AP Program is recognised by universities worldwide, and AP Exams are taken by students in over 120 countries. An AP Exam score of 5 is viewed the same way whether the student is from Nairobi, New Delhi, or New York. As a result, AP Exams enable Indian students to include a score from a standardised and internationally recognised academic program in their college applications.

Who creates the AP curriculum, and what courses are available for exams?

AP courses and exams, which are accessible in India in 23 subjects including Sciences, Mathematics, Social Science, Languages, and Art, are established by committees of American and international university professors who collaborate with expert high school instructors. Members of the AP committee teach at prestigious institutions such as Columbia University, Harvard University, and The University of Pennsylvania.

When students can take AP Exams, and what is the format of the exam?

AP exams are flexible, allowing students to take as many or as few as they like in a given year. AP Exams are often taken in Grades 11 or 12, or both, though some students take them earlier, in Grades 9 or 10. Some students choose to take AP Exams during a gap year after graduating from high school before enrolling in college. AP courses are taught in various Indian schools, however, students can also self-study and take AP exams. The tests, which are held in May each year, consist of a mix of multiple-choice and free-response questions and last between 90 and 200 minutes, depending on the subject.
