Should I pursue an MBA in Australia or Canada?

MBA aspirants, who wish to complete an overseas degree to jumpstart their career, are often confused between the two most popular countries that provide stellar and globally-renowned MBA degrees, namely Canada and Australia. Both countries attract students from a variety of disciplines due to their unconventional and flexible MBA programs. Rather than making a choice based on personal biases, it is wise to research and compare the programs of the two countries and make an informed decision. Most students compare the two countries based on the following criteria:

  • What would the program consist of and will studying in either country offer you an edge?
  • What is the cost? How to acquire and repay the loan (if taken)?
  • What is the Return on Investment (ROI)? In which of the countries is the pay better?
  • What are your future plans after MBA? Do you want to stay and work in the country after the program or come back to your own country and work?

After evaluating the above factors, you must also compare their entry requirements, courses and visa processes to make a final decision for an MBA program. Now let us compare the two countries and find out the difference between the two in terms of the following criteria:

Entry Requirements: Australia vs. Canada

To study for an MBA degree in an Australian B-school, you must take the GMAT test and score well in it. The degree itself would require you to have a 3 or 4 years’ bachelor’s degree, where you have scored over 60%. Students who have had a work experience of over 3 years are preferred in Australian universities, although students without experience are also accepted. Students also have to appear for English proficiency tests like TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE.

For an MBA in Canada, aspirants need to have work experience of over 3 years and apply with a GMAT score. Though most of the Canadian universities accept Standard English proficiency tests like IELTS and TOEFL, many other universities need students to appear for the Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) or the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) tests.

Best MBA Colleges: Australia vs. Canada

Australia has a host of eminent universities that offer world-class MBA programs starting from The University of Sydney which currently ranks 59th in the world and the University of Melbourne, which is ranked 32nd in the world. With the limited class size and a strong focus on inculcating leadership and entrepreneurship, these institutions provide students with enough industrial exposure through internships and also boast of providing the highest employability to their students. The University of Adelaide is also one of the pioneers of management and business studies in Australia. Currently, among the top 1% of the world’s universities, the university is known for its emphasis on strategic management and strong links with different industries, promoting hands-on learning.

The University of Queensland is also another stalwart among the top B-schools down under. Presently, it enjoys the status of the best MBA School in the entire Asia-Pacific region owing to its research-based learning. The university is also well-known due to its accelerated 12-month MBA course specialising in various topics ranging from information technology to business strategy development. There are several other Australian universities offering MBA courses such as the RMIT University, University of New South Wales and the University of Wollongong.

Canada too has many distinguished universities that have made a name for themselves globally. The University of Toronto is one such prestigious B-school that is currently placed 21st in the world. The university prides itself on its state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities offered at its Rotman School of Management’s 2-year MBA program. The University of Alberta and the Western University Ontario are also glowing examples of institutions offering highly industry-specific courses with an emphasis on building leadership; strategic thinking and help students take high-value decisions in the future. The University of Calgary is another notable institution in Canada that offers students the chance to combine their MBA degree with other course-based degrees, which perhaps is the reason why it has graduate employability over 91%. Other illustrious universities of the Great White North include the University of British Columbia, McGill University, University of Windsor and Dalhousie University.

Visa Process: Australia vs. Canada

In order to apply for an Australian study visa, students would require an acceptance letter from the university, along with the Confirmation of Enrolment letter. The COE must clearly mention your course name, date of the university admission, date of degree completion, entry-level, tuition fees, and CRICOS course. Students are also asked to provide their financial and academic documents apart from medical reports and proof of Student Overseas Healthcare Cover (SOHC) through the duration of the program.

To acquire a Canadian study permit, students have to provide an offer letter permit and passport in addition to providing evidence that they would be able to bear the living expenses and tuition fees partly from the return fare. Students also need to be in a good health condition and the visa officer may also ask you to undergo a medical examination.

With the above facts and a bit more research, you can surely make a choice between the two countries. Living in both countries is a joy as both Canada and Australia are developed nations, although Canada can be quite cold in the winter. However, living expenses in Australia may be a bit more expensive as compared to Canada.
