UK’s New Graduate Route Opens for Applications; Indian Students to Benefit

Indian students in the UK will now be able to stay in the country for an extended period of time after finishing their education. Priti Patel, the UK home secretary, announced a new graduate immigration path on Thursday that will allow international students to stay and work in the UK after college, or explore opportunities at any skill level, for at least two years.

“For the first time, the vast majority of graduate applicants will be able to apply entirely digitally, using the UK immigration: ID Check smartphone app. Successful applicants will be awarded an eVisa and will have easy access to this status whenever they need to establish their rights in the UK “according to a statement published by the British High Commission in Delhi.

The new route makes the application process more convenient by allowing students to submit documents online. Previously, applicants were required to visit a UK visa and citizen application service or re-submit their biometrics.

Those who are unable to use the app can still apply online but must go to a UK visa and citizenship application facility.

The change is expected to benefit tens of thousands of Indian students.

More than 56,000 Indian citizens were awarded student visas last year, a 13% rise over the previous year and nearly a quarter of all student visas issued by the UK.

“Talented students from India and throughout the world now have the opportunity to kick-start their careers in the UK at the highest levels of business, science, technology, and the arts, thanks to the UK government’s points-based immigration system.”

“Once they’ve acquired their world-class qualification from one of our excellent education institutions, this new visa will enable them the flexibility to pursue their dreams and progress their professions,” said Patel, the home secretary.

“The numbers show that UK universities are already a popular destination for Indian students, who contribute enormously to the unique living bridge that exists between the UK and India,” said Jan Thompson, acting British high commissioner to India.

“The graduate route will benefit students who want to stay and work in the UK even more, strengthening the relationship between our two countries.” Cooperation in higher education is one of the UK and India’s key commitments in the 2030 Roadmap. and this is another step in the right path.”

Barbara Wickham, director of the British Council in India, stated, “It’s encouraging to see the response from Indian students who have put their faith in a UK education to help shape their careers. The UK is equally committed to assisting Indian students in realising their aspirations through the advantages of the graduate route. It demonstrates both countries’ sustained commitment to realising their mutual knowledge objectives in a rapidly changing world.”

“The British Council is interacting with Indian students planning to study in the UK this autumn by organising webinars and Facebook Lives to provide all the information prospective students want.”

According to a press statement from the British High Commission, the establishment of the new graduate route demonstrates the UK government’s commitment to recruiting outstanding individuals from India and around the world to bring their expertise to the UK and further develop their abilities.
