Australia Confirms Visa Changes Apply to New Students

The latest news, which has arrived from the Government of Australia, serves as a huge sigh of relief for international students. The highlights are provided below.

Australia confirmed that new students will be eligible for measures allowing students to count online studies abroad towards post-study work permits, declared earlier in July.

The Australian government has confirmed on its website that “Existing and new student visa holders who undertake online study outside Australia due to COVID-19 will be able to use that study to count towards the Australian study requirement for a post-study work visa”.

The measures incorporated recommencing of student visa processes with fee waivers in some cases, as well as additional time given to applicants to provide English language results.

Universities Australia Chief Executive, Catriona Jackson stated that “We welcome the sensible changes to visa arrangements for those currently enrolled, and also for prospective students”.

It is evident that international students fund their own education and make a valuable contribution to Australia’s culture and economy.

The clarity around visas is really important for the sector ahead of borders eventually being opened for international students.
