Accepting Aadhaar Card as Identification for GRE and TOEFL Tests

Aadhaar Card will be temporarily accepted as a form of identity for taking the TOEFL and GRE tests started from the 1st of July’21.

In a statement, ETS, the organization that administers these tests, said, “The worldwide public health situation surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in India is still being closely monitored by ETS. ETS’s Office of Testing Integrity has established this provision to help test-takers in light of the continuous spread of COVID-19 and intermittent lockdowns imposed in several states of India.”

The TOEFL iBT test, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, TOEFL Essentials test (starting August 2021), GRE General Test, GRE General Test at Home, and GRE Subject Tests are all exempt from this rule (beginning Oct. 2021).

Students must provide an original complete form of their Aadhaar Card that they received in the mail, which can be utilized to take TOEFL and GRE tests in person at a third-party test centre or at home. Documents that have been photocopied or printed will not be accepted, and documents presented on a mobile phone or other electronic devices will not be accepted.

The Executive Director of the Office of Testing Integrity at ETS, Ray Nicosia, said, “With most cities in India under some type of limitation owing to mandated lockdowns, students are unable to apply for a passport or even renew their existing passports. We are convinced that embracing the Aadhaar Card, which is becoming one of India’s most commonly recognized forms of identification, will be beneficial for Indian students interested in registering for TOEFL and GRE tests.”
