Canada to Offer Permanent Residence to 40,000 International Grads

Canada has announced a residency pathway for 40,000 international graduates of Canadian institutions who will “actively contribute” to the economy. The opportunity is part of a larger announcement to allow over 90,000 essential employees and international graduates to stay in the country permanently because they “possess the skills and expertise (the country) requires to battle the pandemic and accelerate (its) economic recovery.” Two other streams will grant permanent status to 20,000 temporary workers in health care and 30,000 temporary workers in other essential occupations, in contrast to the international graduate option.

“The pandemic has shone a bright light on newcomers’ remarkable contributions,” said Marco E. L. Mendicino, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. International graduates must have completed an eligible Canadian post-secondary degree during the last four years and no earlier than January 2017 to be eligible for the graduate stream. The accelerated path to permanent residency, according to the government, would encourage international graduates to “set roots” in Canada while also assisting the country in retaining the skilled staff it requires as a result of “serious demographic challenges.”

The new citizenship pathway will also help Canada meet its 2021 Immigration Levels Plan, which aims to welcome 401,000 new permanent residents who will help create jobs and fuel long-term growth, according to the government. “International students contribute significantly to our university communities and beyond. They enrich our classrooms by bringing new perspectives; they add more than $22 billion to the Canadian economy each year, and they increase the number of courses available to domestic students. “Those who want to remain in Canada after finishing their studies gain valuable skills and experience in the workplace. These students are wanted by universities across Canada.”

“As we continue to battle the pandemic, immigration will be vital to our economic recovery because it will solve labour shortages and bring development to our workforce,” the government said. “Canada values international graduates’ diversity of expertise, skills, and experiences. These new steps aim to highlight and recognize the significant and special contributions that our foreign graduates have made to Canadian communities from coast to coast. “Students benefit from the quality of our system while aspiring to start their journey of education, work, and settlement in Canada. Also, for Canada, students have been deemed as ‘ideal immigrants’ to build our future workforce. During their studies, students get to know our country and learn about our culture, while contributing and enriching Canadian society with their diverse perspectives and inputs.”

“This announcement will continue to position Canada as not only a premium destination for education, but a destination that embraces diversity, values newcomers’ contributions during a very challenging time, and a country where people can start a new life and build a future.”
