It focuses on science, engineering, information technology, human services and public policy at the graduate level. If students are just starting college, transferring from another school, or taking individual classes, they will have access to excellent service, encouraging teachers and individual attention. Faculty and students are looking for the highest degree of achievement. In the fields of classics and history, molecular biology and computer engineering, students are closely mentored by professors who are established leaders in their fields. The UMBC campus is ideally located minutes from downtown Baltimore's Inner Harbor and Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), and it is only 30 miles north of the nation's capital. Theatre, sports, museums, aquaria, zoos, botanical gardens, restaurants, historic monuments, national treasures, national and regional libraries, research institutes, operas and symphonies are all within a short drive of the campus.

International students are ineligible for Federal Student Aid and institutional need-based financial aid. However, undergraduate international students may be considered for UMBC merit scholarships. International students may participate in UMBC’s Monthly Payment Plan, as an alternative to a one-time payment of the bill in full.
