Supported by the Center for Student Engagement, more than 500 out-of-school groups include campus and community service clubs, cultural awareness and support, music and theater activities, entertainment programming, political activism, career development, and a variety of common interests.

Northwestern sponsors 19 intercollegiate athletic teams (8 men's and 11 women's) as well as intramural, club, informal, and educational sports and fitness programs. Fitness centers have state-of-the-art fitness and recreation facilities. Northwestern students also have a beach of their own and an opportunity to take sailing lessons. Like the rest of Northwestern, university campuses are multi-dimensional and one-of-a-kind.
