Since its establishment in 1868 as Mankato Normal School, serving 27 students, this has been an institution where brilliant ideas meet real-world thought. The school became Mankato State Teachers' College in 1921, Mankato State College in 1957, and Mankato State University in 1975. In 1998, it was named after today's Minnesota State University, Mankato.

The university offers more than 130 undergraduate programs, including 13 pre-professional programs and more than 85 graduate programs, including master's, specialized and doctoral programs. These programs are offered through six Allied Schools of Health and Nursing, Arts and Humanities, Business, Education, Science, Engineering and Technology, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The University also offers its students opportunities for global learning through international collaborations with colleges, companies, and organizations, as well as international lectures and cultural activities, including the annual International Festival and annual Asian-Pacific American, Fagin Pan-African Student Leadership, Native Nations and Chicano-Latin conferences. About 85 miles southwest of the Twins Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota State Mankato is situated at the top of 303 acres overlooking the Minnesota River Valley. The Greater Mankato region has a population of almost 53,000.

The International Maverick Scholarship will automatically be awarded to all incoming undergraduate candidates. In order to continue a scholarship after the first school year, the following requirements must be fulfilled. Maintain legal immigrant status for F-1 or J-1,Achieve a 2.5 GPA term or a 3.0 total MSU GPA term.Successfully earn/complete at least 12 credits per semester.
