Established in 1891 as Throop University in Pasadena, California, and renamed the California Institute of Technology in 1920, Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that brings together some of the world's brightest minds and most creative tools to solve fundamental scientific problems and pressing societal challenges. Caltech students can select from 28 major undergraduate options and 30 major graduate options spread across six academic divisions.

The Institute manages the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA, sends probes to explore the planets of the solar system and measure improvements on the homeworld, owns and operates large-scale research facilities such as the Seismological Laboratory and a global network of astronomical observatories, including Palomar and W. M. Keck Observatories, co-founded and operated LIGO, which detected gravitational waves for the first time in 2016. Caltech's 124-acre campus is situated in the heart of Pasadena, at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains, 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles and about 30 miles from the ocean.
