The biomedical engineering graduate program is housed at UCI's Samueli School of Engineering and closely affiliated with the College of Medicine, School of Biological Sciences and School of Physical Sciences. The department offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering, and a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree in conjunction with the UCI College of Medicine. There are currently 22 full-time faculty in the biomedical engineering program and 59 affiliated faculty from the various schools listed above. Research areas include micro/nano medicine, biophotonics, biocomputation and tissue engineering, with clinical emphases in neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and ophthalmology.
The Biomedical Engineering faculty have special interest and expertise in four thrust areas: Biophotonics, Biomedical Micro/Nanoscale Systems, Bioimaging and Computation, and Molecular and Cellular Engineering. Biophotonics faculty are interested in photomedicine, laser microscopy, optical coherence tomography, medical imaging, and phototherapy. Biomedical Micro/Nanoscale Systems faculty... Read more

Test Requirements
Entry requirements for University of California - Irvine
A cumulative GPA of 3.20 during undergraduate study is recommended for admission into the Biomedical Engineering program. Minimum GRE scores of 310 (quantitative plus verbal), or minimum MCAT scores of 508 are recommended. A minimum score of 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or a minimum score of 94 on the TOEFL iBT, is required of all international students whose native language is not English. Students applying to Biomedical Engineering will be evaluated based on these TOEFL requirements, not on the minimum University standards. As an alternative to the TOEFL, you may submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).UC Irvine only accepts scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center. No paper Test Report ForM.S. will be accepted. An overall minimum score of 7 for admission, with a score of no less than 6 on any individual module. Three letters of recommendation are required to be submitted on your behalf. Letters may be submitted online or on paper via regular mail, online submissions are strongly preferred. Please refer to the Letters of Recommendation website for submission methods. For application review purposes only, scan and upload copies of transcripts for all institutions attended since high school. In the online application, you will be prompted to upload your scanned documents. Please upload both the front and back sides of the transcript. Uploaded transcripts should be recent and include the following: your name, dates of attendance, grades/marks received, credits and grading legend. UCI reserves the right to require official transcripts at any time during the admission process, and rescind any offer of admission made if discrepancies between uploaded and official transcript(s) are found. Official transcripts will be requested if and when you are admitted and decide to attend UCI. Do not send official transcripts until this time, unless you are requested to do so. Completion of a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution with degree standards equivalent to those of the University of California.
