Carleton University is recognized for its advanced research in civil and environmental engineering, with expertise in structural, materials, and earthquake engineering, infrastructure protection, fire safety, transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resources and wastewater, air pollution, hydrogeology and waste management, and heritage and sustainable buildings.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is home to a high concentration of accomplished and internationally recognized researchers, including the Jarislowsky Foundation Research Chair in Water and Global Health. Carleton is also home to a wide assortment of world-class research facilities.

As a result, our graduate students gain hands-on research experience while developing state-of-the-art theories. Our degree programs in Civil Engineering are jointly taught with the University of Ottawa through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering (OCICE). The MASc and Ph.D. require the completion of a thesis while the MEng is predominately course-based with the option of a research project.
