Why the Need for Online IB Tutoring?

Let us first understand the IB (International Baccalaureate) education system structure. This system offers four different programmes at different levels for students between the ages of 3 and 19 years.

  • IB Primary Years Programme (IBPYP) – for students between the ages of 3 and 12 years
  • IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) – for the students between the ages of 11 and 16 years
  • IB Career Related Programmes – for students between the ages of 15 and 19 years
  • IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) – for students between the ages of 16 and 19 years

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) includes the following subjects:

  • Language
  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Science and Technology
  • Arts
  • Personal, Social and Physical education

The IB MYP is a 5-year program and requires a teaching of at least 50 hours/year for each of the following eight subjects covered during the programme.

  • Language Acquisition
  • Language and Literature
  • Individuals and Societies
  • Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Arts
  • Physical and Health Education
  • Design

Students in the DP programme choose one subject from each of the six ‘Subject Groups’ listed below:

  • Group 1: First Language (English)
  • Group 2: Second Language (French, Hindi, etc.)
  • Group 3: Individuals and Societies (History, Economics, Business and Management, etc).
  • Group 4: Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Systems).
  • Group 5: Mathematics and Computer Science.
  • Group 6: Electives (either Visual Arts or a second subject from Groups 3, 4 or 5).

Additionally, all DP students must complete a two-year Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course, work on an Extended Essay (EE), and participate in Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS).

After clearing the IB MYP, the students become eligible for the IB Diploma programme or IB Career Related programmes.

All these programmes are internationally recognised. Students passing with good merits get placed in prestigious universities.
The designed framework of IB does not follow a content based written curriculum and thus does not follow a content-based approach.

While designing the framework. IB follows a practical approach mainly focussing on

  • Skill Development
  • Thorough understanding of the concepts
  • Practical application to problem solving

In spite of all the prestigious merits of attending the IB education system, the student challenges are also needs to be considered. Let’s explore them.

As this programme is very demanding, challenging and diverse and continuous study is required, a student may not always be able to prepare via self-study.

There is something more needed than the knowledge and teaching acquired in the classroom. Student cannot fully rely on the classroom teaching because that alone may not help him/her to face the stiff competition.

The Student May not Know:

  • Where to start?
  • What to focus on more?
  • How the IB curriculum examinations are designed?
  • What resources are available and how to use them effectively?

So, the need for a tutoring is inevitable. Help beyond the scope of the classroom becomes a must and much needed one. And if the tutoring can be a one-to-one tutoring, it is the best choice.

Benefits of IB Tutoring

Let us look at how this tutoring will help the student to stand apart in his group and get him his dream career/university?

The IB system requires the students to think critically and solve problems. The traditional memorization way of learning never helps, but only the practical application of the concepts learned does. Learning the tough concepts with just the classroom help is not sufficient. But in IB tutoring classes, the IB tutors adapt different teaching styles to make the tough concepts intelligible and easy.

The IB syllabus is a demanding one and considered to be tougher than the “A” levels as students are required to study six subjects. Apart from this they have the essays and other assessments. The vastness of the programme takes a toll on the confidence levels of the students following which they switch over to easier alternatives.

But the tutors at the IB tutoring provides all the support in terms of constantly guiding, grooming and motivating the students to balance the study and the other extras, in the process helping them to perform confidently in the assessments.

The tutors would provide personalized attention unlike in class, where the teacher would not be able to provide that one-on-one attention. Also, the tutor would share her/his personal experiences and help and guide the students find their path to success. Privileges of online tutoring is the present trend.

How To Choose An Apt Tutor?

Now that we have understood the need of tutor and how the tutor is pivotal in guiding the student to success, we can move forward to a crucial task of choosing the perfect tutor for our child. How can we perform this task? What are the various parameters we need to consider before choosing the best tutor?

Academic Qualification and Experience

While hiring a tutor, higher qualifications and experience are required to be considered as the tutor must have a strong subject knowledge and indefectible command on the subject. Also, he/she should have the necessary experience of working with students under the IB curriculum. So, it is important to be on the lookout for Higher Degree Certificate, Experience Certificate and Teaching certificate when hiring a tutor.

Excellent Communications Skills

A highly qualified and experienced tutor may not be helpful if he/she cannot communicate unerringly. And students under the guidance of such a tutor may lack a strong understanding of the concepts.

Adaptability Skills

The basic foundation is different for different students. Also, each student would require a different teaching style to grasp a new concept. A good tutor is one who understands the strengths of each student and changes his/her teaching style accordingly and works on the student’s weaknesses. This way the student is comfortable and confident to apply the newly learnt concepts with ease.

Now in the present world, online one-to-one tutoring is prevalent worldwide and can be made available from the comfort of the home. So, in short to ace the IB Board examinations, look beyond the scope of the classroom and other study material resources available and get a good tutor for your child and be sure to choose the right one!!!
