What is International Baccalaureate (IB)?

International Baccalaureate (IB) is a non-profit organization that offers four educational programs for children aged 3 to 19. To teach these programs, schools must be authorized by International Baccalaureate. The 4 programs offered are, Primary year program (PYP), Middle year program (MYP), Diploma Program (IBDP) and Career related program.

Key features of IB

IB fosters a distinctive set of attributes to develop active, compassionate and lifelong learners and these qualities make IB students make exceptional contributions on campus.

Build curiosity – They develop their natural curiosity and acquire necessary skills to research and show independence in learning.

Knowledgeable – Concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance are explored by students and helps acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines

Ask questions – Students learn to apply thinking skills critically and creatively and recognize and approach complex problems to make reasoned and ethical decisions

Principled approach – Students act with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the individual, group and community. They are groomed to take responsibility for their actions.

Good communicators – Understanding and expressing ideas and information confidently in more than one language help students to work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.

What are the advantages of IB?

With the emergence of multiple curriculums in India, making the right choice would be a challenging task. Listed below are some of the benefits of choosing an IB curriculum.

Diverse approach towards education – The IB curriculum offers students to choose from a wide range of subjects which is not usually offered in a traditional school.

Skill Development – IB curriculum encourages students to develop critical thinking and research skills that are crucial for excellence in college and beyond. Students are encouraged to explore different approaches to learning and take responsibility for the choices they have made in their own educational progress.

Global Recognition – IB Certificate is recognized by Local and international universities. It incorporates quality practice from research and the global community of schools.

Real time practical teaching – IB curriculum is based on concept based learning methodology where students are taught concepts rather than just memorizing the facts and figures. Students are encouraged to challenge assumptions and think critically.

Personality Development – IB curriculum focuses on the holistic development of the student. The Emotional intelligence of the student develops as they inquire into the world around them.

How is IB different from other National Boards like CBSE?

The IB program is extremely practical and application-based. The International Baccalaureate (IB) offers a much broader learning range that emphasizes all-around development.
An IB program’s pedagogy focuses on “how to learn” rather than “what to learn.” The IB examinations assess a student’s intelligence rather than their pace or memory. Furthermore, before the Middle Years Program, there are no externally evaluated examinations.

Is IB recognized in India?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a superior educational board with strict standards that ensures it is recognized by universities and colleges all over the world. The Association of Indian Universities has also ranked the IB Diploma Program on par with CBSE, ISCE, and other state boards (AIU). The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) is the international version to the CBSE’s 10+2 certification.

Do international universities accept IB?

Yes, all international universities across the globe accept the IB certification provided by the International Baccalaureate board.

What is an IB Diploma?

The IB diploma is a two-year course that is similar to the Indian CBSE 10+2 qualification and is done in Grades 11 and 12.

What is the recognition of the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in India?

The Association of Indian Universities has determined that the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program is equivalent to grade 10 of an Indian Board Assessment. After completing the MYP, students may apply to any school or college in India for further education.

How long will it take to study for an IB program?

IB curriculum offers 4 programs

Primary year program for students aged 3 to 10. It focuses on the development of the child as a whole as an inquirer both in the classroom and world outside.

Middle year program for students aged 11 to 16 and emphasizes on intellectual change. It encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the external world preparing them for success in further study and in life.

Diploma program is open to any student aged 16 to 19 at schools that have been authorized to implement the program

When are IB exams taken?

The major exams conducted annually by the IB board under the Baccalaureate degree and Diploma program are held in two sessions, one in November and the other in May.
