TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language. It measures the language proficiency of non-native speakers who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. The TOEFL iBT test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points. The four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) receive a scaled score from 0 to 30. The scaled scores from the four sections are added together to determine the total score.
There are three test versions of the TOEFL, and your choice depends on your preference. The most widely accepted version is the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test), which is conducted in a traditional testing environment at a test center. The TOEFL iBT Home Edition is identical to the TOEFL iBT, but it can be taken from the comfort of your home and is monitored online by a human proctor. The syllabus for both these versions is the same. TOEFL Essentials is a shorter, more flexible test that includes both academic and general English.
