GRE Quantitative Reasoning Syllabus 2024: Key Topics to Master
We at MANYA-The Princeton Review have extensively researched the GRE Quantitative Reasoning Syllabus.
You need to get a good GRE score to get into most top colleges, especially in the STEM field. 165+ in the quant section means you are already half there.
GRE or Graduate Record Examination is a standardized test that allows colleges mostly in U.S.A and Canada and some European countries to screen students for admissions. It’s owned and run by Educational Testing Services (ETS).
What is GRE?
GRE is a computer-based online exam conducted throughout the year for students to test and prove their credibility and place their applications to study undergraduate programs in top universities and colleges in U.S, U.K, Canada, Germany, and many other European countries.
GRE Exam Pattern
Structure of GRE
GRE has 3 sections:
AWA – 1 Issue Essay (30 mins) – Score (0 to 6 in 0.5 point increments)
Verbal – 2 Sections – Score (130 to 170 in 1 point increments)
Section 1 – 12 questions (18 mins)
Section 2 – 15 questions (23 mins)
Quant – 2 Sections – Score (130 to 170 in 1 point increments)
Section 1 – 12 questions (21 mins)
Section 2 – 15 questions (26 mins)
Both verbal and quantitative section has two sections respectively. The sections are section adaptive and test the cognitive aptitude of the test taker.

Key topics to MASTER GRE
Quantitative section has always got different weightage of questions from different sections over the years and has been a continuous process of ever-changing trends. Although it’s very less predictable but we can summarise some of the key topics to master that are surely held as important and mandatory topics for GRE.
We can understand the overall trend of question patterns based on official GRE quantitative reasoning practice questions.. More focus has always been given to fundamental rules and properties of core math topics like Number properties, expressions and equations, linear equations and quadratic equations. Topics of arithmetic nature like percentage and ratios, Work-rate are also very likely to be seen repeatedly. Keeping in mind that GRE is an aptitude test, ETs has always tried to keep the questions less calculative and tricky. Every question tests whether a student can relate the question to a certain rule or property and get it done quickly or will try to do it conventionally. Students who are good in abstract thinking and have a wider range of mental spectrum to see things and find creative ways to get the answer done has always thrived in the exam.
GRE Quantitative reasoning also asks a lot of questions based on Data interpretation and data extraction. Having a good knowledge of different forms of visual data representation and having a knack to quickly scanning through data and finding the relevant answer is also a very important skill.
Last but not least from geometry we can expect some usual questions based on types of triangles, angles, and lines (parallel and perpendicular). Once in a while, we get to see some really good and intuitive questions from geometry which need a very in-depth understanding of certain basic properties of geometry to solve, but mostly questions from geometry are easy to medium level.
GRE EXAM ANALYSIS
Weightage of Questions from 4 sections of GRE Quantitative Reasoning from last three years.
Based on the above chart it’s quite clear that our focus area has to be more on data interpretation, algebra, arithmetic & geometry in the given order.
To develop a keen eye to crack the questions of GRE Quantitative Reasoning, a student must master the list of topics mentioned here.
GRE QUANTITATIVE REASONING – TOPICS
How to prep for GRE Quantitative Reasoning
GRE quantitative preparation is a combination of learning the necessary topics to excel and working on question solving practice to become able to finish the sum in a prescribed amount of time, while maintaining a high level of accuracy. All these three aspects go hand-in-hand in becoming better at GRE Quantitative reasoning.
At MANYA-The Princeton Review we have designed an exclusive manual to help the student get the best prep experience. Our research team has followed the question pattern of the GRE quantitative reasoning section over a period of 40+ years and has come up with the amalgamation of apt question sets to give a holistic idea to the student so that they can prepare up to their best potentials.
Manya Classroom Course
MANYA-The Princeton Review GRE Quantitative Reasoning classroom course is designed in three levels.
- Learning stage
- Practice stage
- Application stage
The course starts off with a collection of basic questions to demonstrate various fundamental aspects of the techniques that we preach which are battle tested and has proven their worth by fetching great results for millions of our students so far. Upon successful completion of learning these techniques and getting a hang of how to implement them in real GRE level questions we move on to the next level which is all about practicing these techniques on various topic based questions that are specifically chosen to cater to the need of the student. These questions test the application success of the student of the techniques while also reminding the need to understand the fundamentals of maths.
After completing the entire syllabus that is applicable for GRE Quantitative Reasoning then we put forward the challenging questions to the student. These questions test the students’ abilities at various fronts.
Merits tested by the Challenging Questions All questions are designed with specific aims to address one of the above mentioned aspects. Thus the book provides a complete spectrum of questions to see that the student is getting the necessary practice as well as insight on GRE quantitative reasoning paper.
Alongside the classes students periodically take mock tests to check and assess their efficiency and level of preparation.
MANYA-The Princeton Review portal gives access to Eight Full-length Mock Tests to the students which are as per the latest shorter version of the GRE exam. These mock test and the AI-generated test analysis of these tests for the student give them a comprehensive understanding of where they stand on their journey of complete preparation. Besides these, all trainers take special care of the students by providing them extra help in 1 on 1 sessions where they have more direct access to the trainers and they can discuss their doubts more comfortably.
MANYA-The Princeton Review portal also provides students with access to over 1000 question drills which are categorised based on difficulty levels, topics and question pattern. Students can also access the pre recorded sessions for all the topics from the portal which are done by our most trusted trainers. As a package the course provides everything a student may need to excel in his/her preparation. Overall the course in made keeping in mind all the needs of a GRE aspirant and how they can be meet. MANYA-The Princeton Review provides the Best Trainers, Best Materials and the Best Strategies to each and every student of ours so that they can achieve their dream of cracking GRE and landing in their favourite college in abroad.
