In an announcement made today, the US President Donald Trump issued a statement that immigration will be temporarily suspended for 60 days. However, this is unlikely to impact the H1B and other visa holders. While addressing the media, President Trump said that the suspension of immigration pertains only to Green Card and other permanent immigration procedures, and that H1B, F1 and other US Visa holders will not be affected.
“Millions of Americans sacrificed their jobs in order to battle the virus and save the lives of our fellow citizens. We have a solemn duty to ensure these unemployed Americans regain their jobs and livelihoods. Therefore, in order to protect American workers, I will be issuing a temporary suspension of immigration into the United States,” said Donald Trump while addressing the media.
The US president also emphasised that replacing the Americans who were laid off because of the virus threat, with new immigrants, will be wrong and unjust. He also mentioned that after the period of 60 days, decision about any extension or modification will be taken, subject to the economic condition at that time.
He further added that this order is only applicable to people who are either seeking a permanent residency or a Green Card. Hence, it will not affect those going to the US on a temporary basis.
