Number of Indian Students in Germany Continues to Rise

Germany is quickly recovering from the effects of foreign travel prohibitions and has reclaimed its status as a top destination for Indian students seeking international education.

According to the latest numbers from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the number of international students studying at German universities increased again in the ongoing winter semester.

This follows a substantial drop in summer enrollments in 2021, when the German government implemented Covid-19 travel bans on numerous countries, including India, delaying international travel.

Around 330,000 international students are now enrolled at German universities, according to a DAAD snapshot poll.

Despite the epidemic, the number of international first-semester students has increased again, according to the CDC.

Despite the outbreak, DAAD estimates that the number of international first-semester students has climbed to at least 72,000. According to the report, the number of overseas students will keep going up.

In a message, DAAD President Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee said, “The poll of our member universities allows us to look forward to the new year with hope: despite the pandemic, the number of international students in Germany continues to grow.”

“The number of first-year international students has also increased after declining in the previous winter semester. An increase of roughly 13% or more is far better than anticipated for the summer. These results are a strong indicator of Germany’s popularity as a study destination.

Overall, the number of new international students enrolling grew from roughly 64,000 in the winter semester 2020-21 to around 72,000 to 80,000 in the winter semester 2021-22.

A number of reasons have contributed to the growth. Despite a large drop in the previous year, most German HEIs have seen a remarkable comeback in the number of guest and exchange students (non-degree). In addition, universities are reporting a considerable increase in the number of international students pursuing master’s degrees.

The number of overseas students enrolled increased by an average of 5% or more in 31% of the universities. Around 40% of institutions claimed that their numbers were constant.

Despite the current epidemic, the poll shows a definite return of international students to campus: at least three quarters of first-year international students are now in Germany.

Only 7% of colleges believe that less than half of overseas students are already enrolled. Currently, teaching is a combination of in-person and digital remote learning.

Between early and mid-December, the DAAD questioned roughly 270 higher education institutions and got 158 responses. The selected universities are home to around 65 percent of all international students in Germany.
