GRE for MBA

GMAT or GRA – What to Choose?

Business school applicants are expected to have a clear-cut plan of action prior to submitting applications. Some of the aspects which they need to consider are – which program & specialization to apply for, preferred list of B-schools, when to apply and one of the most important decisions – which standardized test to take – GMAT or GRE. Till almost a decade back, taking the GMAT was a prerequisite and the only option for B-school aspirants. Thereafter, the options have widened and now more than 1200 B-schools accept GRE scores in lieu of GMAT scores for their MBA, specialized masters and other graduate business programs. An increasing number of top B-schools such as Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, MIT Sloan, Duke, Yale, etc., accept GRE scores for their flagship programs. Most of the MBA programs consider GRE and GMAT equally.

Key Points

Many B-schools accept the GRE in lieu of GMAT because it widens the applicant pool to include applicants who are considering other degrees in addition to the MBA. Students with flexible post-graduate plans can also benefit from making an informed choice between the GRE and the GMAT, as GRE scores can enable them to plan for an MBA, a master’s, dual degree program or even a Ph.D. in business or management. Applicants who are confident of scoring better on the GRE compared to the GMAT have the flexibility to opt for the GRE.

While B-schools do not publish any data in terms of minimum GRE score requirement for their graduate business programs, the ETS GRE Comparison Tool for Business Schools is a readily available tool that helps applicants understand and interpret GRE scores in the context of GMAT scores. The tool calculates a predicted GMAT score based on an applicant’s GRE Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores. The tool does not calculate the exact GMAT score but a predicted score range of the GMAT score.
