In 1853, the local Presbyterian Church established the Grier School. The school understands the value of a diverse student body and aims to enroll students from around the world who through their time at Grier, will become emboldened, committed, and prepared for the future. Each year, students from more than 15 countries are enrolled in the school, making up half of the student body.

In the heart of the Appalachian Mountains lies the Grier Academy. Sana Mens in Corpore Sana, meaning Sound Mind in a Sound Body, is the motto of the school. Grier School hosts international students coming from more than 14 different countries each year. ESL support classes are offered during the school year. Prior to the start of school, many of the international students must participate in the eight-week Summer TOEFL/SAT Program as preparation for school.
Grier also offers a limited number of merit scholarships based on extraordinary academic promise, as reflected in a candidate’s academic record and her SSAT scores.
