Does this resonate with your career aspirations? If yes, then this blog is for you.

Please refer to the ten application tips to apply and prepare for top universities in the UK:

1. Ensure you meet all requirements

1

You will need:

  • An up-to-date passport
  • An English language proficiency qualification
  • Proof of how you will be funding your studies
  • A Tuberculosis test (certain countries)
  • And possibly more

2. Good grades speak volumes!

2

Good grades can fetch you an advantage and double the chances to be considered. This means good grades in school-leaving examinations (i.e., A levels, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers or BTECs) and good scores in any additional tests.

3. Beyond good grades

3

The application form of universities often provides space for describing extracurricular involvement though this is improbable to influence the admissions committee into offering you a place as the academic record and potential are decisive. Nonetheless, if your course requires an interview, then you can use that to talk about your profile in a holistic way.

4. Academic suitability

4

Documents such as personal statement, letters of recommendation, resume must highlight your passion for the subject.

5. You are unique – be yourself!

5

This is a tricky bit. Share all the good that you have done, all the course-related preparations that you might have undertaken. Just know that this does not come naturally to everyone as there is always a risk that you may overshoot. Don’t do that!! Stay genuine!! The “true you” has to be at the heart of the application.

6. Be sure to proofread

6

To apply, you need to be organised. You must pre-plan. Plan exhaustively! Cover points such as fixing dates for taking any additional tests, getting in touch with referees, and leaving time for proofreading and receiving feedback on your application. Highly selective universities such as Oxford and Cambridge open their application process about one year in advance.

7. Maintain a positive perspective

7

The skills you learn in terms of mastering an academic subject and critical thinking will be further stimulated during your higher education. So, if you don’t get an offer from your first-choice university, do not get defeated; chances are that your higher education experience is still most likely just about to start. Stay positive!

8. Select an appropriate preparation course

9

Excluding applicants who come from an English-speaking country, one will have to deliver proof of advanced English language proficiency. Accepted language tests include the following:

  • IELTS Academic
  • TOEFL iBT
  • C1 Advanced
  • PTE Academic

9. Where to apply

10

Postgraduate studies:

Master’s and PhD students applicants can apply directly to their chosen university. You can apply via the UK PASS system as well.

PhD programmes:

Applicants are usually expected to also choose a suitable supervisor from the university.

10. Final steps after receiving your university acceptance letter

  • Fix your health insurance. All the U/EEA residents can use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
  • File for the UK student visa well in time.
  • Find out if you require to register at a police station within the first week after you arrive in the UK (this is only required if your visa sticker in your passport states ‘Police registration’).
  • Few UK universities require you to pre-enrol online on the university website before arriving in the UK.
