What is ACT?

ACT is the abbreviation of American College Testing. It is a standardized examination enabling students to get admission to American colleges and universities. Initially, it was a paper and pencil-based test, however, in 2015 students can take the test online. The test has seen a remarkable increase in the number of test-takers which is increasing with each passing year.

ACT originally consisted of four tests and they are:

1. English Test (75 Questions – 45 Minutes)
2. Mathematics Test (60 Questions – 60 Minutes)
3. Reading Test (40 Questions – 35 Minutes)
4. Science Test (40 Questions – 35 Minutes)

Here is what to expect in each section of the ACT. Let us find out:

English Section on the ACT

• The ACT English test includes 5 passages and 75 questions with a 45-minute time limit.
• Here you will be tested on the grammar including punctuation, subject-verb agreement, verb forms, pronoun forms, adjectives, adverbs, modifiers, idioms, sentence structure, paragraph structure, and writing style.

Math Section on the ACT

• ACT Math has 60 questions and is 60 minutes duration.
• Here you will be tested on pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, plane geometry, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry.

Reading Section on the ACT

• There are 4 passages and 40 questions (10 per passage). ACT Reading has a 35-minute time limit.
• The ACT Reading passage types are prose fiction, humanities, social science, and natural science (there will be one of each type).

Science Section on the ACT

• There are 6 passages and a total of 40 questions, to be completed in 35 minutes. The ACT Science passage types will be as follows: 3 research summaries (7 questions each), 2 data representation passages (6 questions each), and 1 conflicting viewpoint passage (7 questions).
• Here you need to be able to navigate and understand typical science texts.

ACT Writing Essay (Optional)

• Here your job is to write an essay in which you take some sort of position on the prompt all while assessing the three perspectives provided in the boxes.
